On October 16th, 2019, I was invited to and attended the Women’s Sports Foundation’s 40th Annual Salute at Cipriani Wall Street. I play for the South Bronx United Girls U-14 team, and at this event I was surrounded by amazing athletes talking about equality and how important girls sports are.
At the Gala, I was chosen to walk with a soccer player. She’s Brazilian, plays for Brazil and is number 10! Can you guess who it was? It was Marta, the all-time highest scoring player in World Cup history! She’s played in fiveWorld Cups and is widely considered the greatest female soccer player of all time!
When I first entered the venue I caught a glimpse of her. I whispered excitedly to my mom. After that, I was able to have a conversation with her. I asked her about being a professional soccer player and if she liked all the traveling she has done. I was nervous at first but then I became really comfortable.
I talked to other professional athletes too. I even took a picture with MEGAN RAPINOE! I’ve always watched the US Women’s National Team play. So, when I met her and was able to take a picture with her, I wanted to cry, but since I had makeup on I saved my tears.
Dressing up for this event was also fun. I had to look really fancy! At one point in the night, I also had to ride a bicycle on the stage, coached by SBU alumna and coach Julieth Noguez, while people were donating money to support the Women’s Sports Foundation.
Each time I remember that night I feel really grateful that Executive Director Andrew So, South Bronx United, and the Women’s Sports sFoundation gave me this amazing opportunity!
